Napoleonic wargaming

I am about to restart Napoleonic wargaming using my old Airfix figures, after a gap of about 30 years.
I plan to use Arty Conliffe's Shako 2 rules. This page has some notes about what I am doing.

Basing

I am using 3 mm plywood bases with magnetic sheet underneath to hold them firmly for storage.
Bases are from Litkoaero.

  • Infantry (line): 2 x (2.25 inch x 1 inch, 4 figures) + 2 x (1.125 inch x 1 inch, 2 figures)
  • Infantry (light): 1 x (2.25 inch x 1 inch, 4 figures) + 4 x (1.125 inch x 1 inch, 2 figures)
  • Cavalry: 2 x (3 inch x 2 inch, 3 figures)
  • Artillery: 1 x (4 inch x 2 inch, 3 figures (horse), 4 figures (foot), 5 figures (heavy))(actually using 100 mm x 50 mm bases)
  • Divisional command: 1 x (2 inch x 2 inch, 2 mounted figures)
  • General: 1 x (3 inch x 2 inch, 3 figures)
  • Aides: 1 x (1 inch x 2 inch, 1 figure)

Base labelling

I put a small square at the back corner of each base, colour coded to indicate the unit number. It is normally two colour, the top colour being the first digit and the lower the second.
If the square is split bottom-left to top-right ('slash') it is the first battalion.
If the square is split lop-left to bottom-right ('backslash') it is the second battalion.
If it is split horizontally ('dash') it is the third battalion.
The colours are those of the resistor colour codes.
In addition, one of the bases has some steel paper on its back edge, allowing a label on magnetic sheet to be attached to it, if necessary.

Storage

I am using the A4 boxes from Really Useful Boxes, lined with steel paper.

I box holds a division (just).
2nd French Infantry Division, Waterloo.
3 battalions of light infantry, 6 battalions of line infantry, 1 foot battery, divisional commander, and one of the general's aides.
