Model bases (Barrie Lovell style)

A squad of H&R German infantry on a base made using the Lovell method.

Introduction

I had a go at basing some figures using the method detailed on Derek Hodge's website (see this page for details: http://www.hodgenet.co.uk/GA/howtobase.htm ). (Derek found out about this method from Barrie Lovell, a contributor to the Grande Armee Yahoo Group).

And I now discover that this seems to be the same Barrie Lovell who wargames Vietnam using Crossfire (see http://www.gruntonline.com/Wargaming/wargaming.htm)! Small world!

The materials

I used the following in the example above:
Figures: H&R (I usually use GHQ)
Base: 2 mm thick MDF
Sand: Vitakraft "African Sandy" bird sand for ornamental birds. 2 pound gets you 2 kg - should last me a while - even if I get a few budgies!
Paint: DecoArt Sandstone and Inscribe Taupe. (Craft acrylic in 2 fl oz squeeze bottles, about 1 pound each). I drybrushed the former on the latter.
Static grass: summer mix, from Javis.
Adhesive for sticking static grass: PVA
Base size was my usual 30 mm x 30 mm.

The result

I'm very happy with the result. It takes a bit longer than my flock-only bases, but ends up nice and weighty, and it looks good!
Only thing I need to do now is varnish it and check that it doesn't darken too much.

The figures are already varnished, and because of it are pretty dark. Must remember to lighten up my paints even more next time I do some figures. (I think you need to add roughly an equal amount of white to the "proper" colour to get things looking good at 6 mm scale).
