Machine gun bunker

The bunker.

Front view of the bunker. The attackers would normally be moving from left to right across the front of the bunker. So it's really the left side of the bunker - I lied!

The design

I needed a machine gun bunker for the "Hit the dirt!" scenario "Green hell", so decided to make my own.

I based it on the "M.G. - Schartenstand aus Rundholz und Steinpackung" (Embrasured machine gun bunker of logs with stone packing) detailed in the 1943 "Bildheft Neuzeitlicher Stellungsbau". This was published as "German field works of World War II" by Bellona in the mid-70's. No publication date, no ISBN number, so I though very little chance of finding yourself a copy.

However, according to Dan Berry (thanks, Dan!) it is available from Merriam Press (www.merriam-press.com), entitled "German Fieldworks of World War II" for sale in PDF file format.

The model

The interlocked wooden logs that make up the double walls of the structure are plastic rod.

The earth mound was gradually built up out of PVA adhesive, DAS modelling clay and flock powder.

The two trees are made by TimeCast. I added them because it looked a bit bare without them. Must have been hard work for the engineers digging through the tree roots...

The bushes are homemade (see Foliage for details)
