Representing troops in buildings

German infantry and a Panther approach a ruined farm occupied by a British squad and HMG section (GHQ figures/tank, Timecast building, Woodland Scenics and homemade trees).

The problem

I play Crossfire using 6 mm scale, with predominantly Timecast buildings mounted on Spearhead bases (75 mm square).

I have tried several methods of handling troops within buildings, none of which has been particularly successful:
• keep a note of which buildings they are in and remove the squad bases from the table
• place the squad bases next to the building
• replace the building with a flat top-view of it (normally a photograph), and place the squad bases on it
• perch the squad bases on the building

German squad and FO (all GHQ) occupy a house.

Plastic covers

I used rectangles of thin (about 1 mm) transparent plastic (PVC I think), bent twice so that each forms an open cap that snugly fits over the building base, to allow the squad bases to be placed on the flat top.

In my case the top is 75 mm x 75 mm, and the end rectangles are 50 mm high x 75 mm wide. So far this seems to work better than the methods mentioned above.
